Jenna, I really appreciate your post. I had a similar experience yesterday as well when I walked out of a social media conference on the verge of tears after a group of presenters turned trans-feminine/female gender identity/expression into a punchline. As the only visibly trans person in the room I was mortified and became even more so when one presenter proceeded to defend the "joke."

I've seen a few of the Avenue Q numbers online and it's so bad a friend and I were thinking of passing out leaflets when it came to town in order to limit the damage of its message. The "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist" song is particularly harmful. Like you say, the song suggest racism is alright if everyone is racist. Of course, this is not how racism works.

In "Retaining Benefits, Avoiding Responsibility," Paul Kivel says, "Today we redefine racism as a mutual problem by saying, 'This country is just a big melting pot,' 'Anybody can be prejudiced,' or 'People of color attack white people too.'" That is to say, the "everyone's racist" argument is a redefinition of racism that allows Whites to retain the benefits, and avoid taking responsibility for, racism.

I suggest everyone read the linked PDF of Kivel's article. He uses "the history of the relationship between white Europeans and Native Americans to illustrate how these tactics [for retaining the benefits of and avoiding taking responsibility for racism] have been (and still are) used to cover up the violence that white people commit toward people of color." His illustrations are particularly worthy of consideration on a day when 49 U.S. states are celebrating "Columbus Day," and only one U.S. state, South Dakota, has declared today "Native American Day."

Jenna, Your indignation is most warranted. Truly we must be mindful of our thoughts because they eventually become spoken. Playwrights and script writers too often are crass, insensitive, and care little if injury comes from their lines...just so they get laughs and a fatter paycheck. Probably the persons who review these type of shows are just more of the same. Caution must be exercised in our choice of entertainment. Almost all old children's cartoons and stories rejoice over something's hopeless delima. Delimas and sufferings are not funny, though cartoons and TV shows present them as humor. When people are indifferent about belittling other people its small wonder that they are equally indifferent to the suffering of other beings. My refusal to eat at Red Lobster is regarded as silly by some familiy members even though I point out that the lobsters are dropped in boiling water while still alive. I don't care. I must speak out when it is needed even if it falls on deaf ears.
